Community
We work with schools, colleges and community groups across County Durham to create enriching heritage experiences. If you’re interested in collaborating on education or outreach, we’d love to hear from you, please contact [email protected]
School Visits
Bring learning to life with a heritage railway adventure. Tailored sessions connect history, nature, engineering and local geography with hands-on discovery
Railway Safety
Enjoy the railway safely – together.
We take safety seriously, both on and off the tracks. Please keep clear of trackside areas, only cross at designated points and always supervise children. Our team and volunteers are trained in railway safety and always happy to offer guidance. If you’re visiting with a school or group, we offer pre-visit resources to help young explorers stay safe while having fun.
Heritage History
Weardale’s railway line is more than a route, it’s a living thread through the region’s past. From the days of coal and lead mining to the quiet resilience of its farming communities, each mile echoes with stories of hard work and local pride. Old station buildings, stone bridges and village stops reveal clues to a time when rail travel connected lives and livelihoods.
Today, every journey invites you to step into this rich heritage, to discover a landscape shaped by generations and to feel part of a story that still rolls on through the hills.
Public Holidays
Make the most of your time off with fun-filled journeys through Weardale. Special services run during school holidays and bank holidays perfect for family days out.
